Stereofly’s New Years’ resolution is to champion the music we have fallen in love with like never before and unite local art communities in the Southeast for a more collective and cultural consciousness. Needless to say, we think 2014 is going to be a great year and have a lot of great things in store.
One of the facets is taking over 30 artists to SX to showcase to the tens of thousands of people who go to SX in search of something new and amazing. Music lovers, radio personalities, and people in the music industry flood the streets of Austin, and we have secured TWO DAYS for showcases at Javelina Bar.
The local artists you have come to love can only do so much on their own, and we see 2014 as the year Stereofly can assist these artists on their journey to take their music to a larger audience. We believe with enough support from both artists and art lovers, our collective efforts can help transform the culture of the Southeast.
BANDS WE ARE TAKING OUT:
CUSSES (SAVANNAH, GA) Savannah-bred Cusses is high energy, fun and catchy while still bringing some heaviness. Featuring a unique guitar-bass amp hybrid, beastly drumwork and the ever-active front woman Angel Bond whose non-stop dancing and great vocal range makes for an unforgettable live show.
CARNAVAL (CHARLESTON, SC) Carnaval’s music could be the soundtrack to your favorite thriller film. The use of bows on guitars only reinforces the brooding atmosphere painted by Carnaval, perfectly complimented by sparse but powerful vocals.
SHALLOW PALACE (COLUMBIA, SC) Shallow Palace is an American Rock-and-Roll band playing a visceral style of rock music influenced by the last 50 years of the genre. Psychedelic lead riffs flow through a heavy ’70s metal-inspired rhythm section rooted in grunge-punk ideals combine to make the most notable part to their sound.
NED & THE DIRT (COLUMBIA, SC) Ned and the Dirt is a three-piece indie/rock outfit hailing from Columbia, SC. Combining the sweet singer-songwriter vibe of Ned Durrett with the rock sensibility of the Dirt, Ned and the Dirt brings a fresh brand of emotional, high-energy music to the listener.
ZONAEA (CHARLESTON, SC) Filled with noise, dissonance and an acute sense of dynamic, Zonaea is a unique and refreshing rock band from Charleston that isn’t afraid to break up a beautiful moment with a little yelling.
DEATH ON TWO WHEELS (ATLANTA, GA) This fivesome may have shed a bit of their southern skin, but the classic ’70s/meets grunge/meets modern mashup remains in full force, capturing their wealth of influences in a more concise, no-holds-barred sort of fashion.
IRON WHIP (ATLANTA, GA) Dark and heavy might be the best way to describe this Atlanta three-piece with a stoner-rock leaning with a lot of attitude.
THE ROCKETBOYS (AUSTIN, TX) Local hosts and Austin, TX indie-rockers The Rocketboys are masters of subtlety and mood, using harmonies and melodies to paint the scene.
SAY BROTHER (Columbia, SC) Notorious for their rowdy, whiskey-soaked, country rock n’ roll, Say Brother is a great time packed in foot-stomping rhythms and a commanding story from singer Tripp LaFrance.
CANCELLIERI (Columbia, SC) Cancellieri is the creative outlet of songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Ryan Hutchens. Over three years and three EPs, Cancellieri has grown from its roots in home recording and electronic soundscapes into a full-bodied, mature and impressive statement of American indie music.
DEAR BLANCA (Columbia, SC) Offering an eclectic range of sounds inspired by diverse acts such as ’80s punk group Minutemen, as well as Townes Van Zandt, Dear Blanca promises energetic rock music coupled with folk-songwriting aesthetics both mild-mannered and rambunctious.
MEGAN JEAN & THE KFB (Charleston, SC) Megan Jean and the KFB arrange a demented blend of americana, punk, dance and the avant-garde that has been earning them a dedicated following all over America.
THE RESTORATION (Columbia, SC) The Restoration’s members grew up performing in orchestras, church choirs, fiddle groups and rock bands in the small town of Lexington, South Carolina. Musically, the band wishes to take part in the evolution of traditional and regional music, providing a living, contemporary voice that embraces overlapping genre boundaries while remaining aware and respectful of music history.
RACHEL KATE (Charleston, SC) A singer-songwriter in a very true sense, her songs are emotional and beautiful extensions of her charismatic personality – a quality that has garnished a growing fan base show after show.
MASON JAR MENAGERIE (Fountain Inn, SC) Mason Jar Menagerie come from a small town in South Carolina. Their country and folk roots make their rock n’ roll craft a griping exploration with true southern grit.
BANDITOS (Nashville, TN) Banditos are famously eclectic, paying tribute to a little Aretha here, a little CCR there, with a tidbit of Squirrel Nut Zippers packed around the edges. While such a myriad of influences would bury a lesser band in tuneless muck, Banditos use their disparate influences to forge a more assured identity.
STAGBRIAR (Columbia, SC) Brother and sister Alex and Emily McCollum sing perfect harmonies over intricate, dark songs – a departure from the typical folk-inspired band that maintains all of the best qualities of folk.
YAUTJA (Nashville, TN) February will see Yautja’s debut LP, Songs of Descent (Forcefield Records). Crushingly heavy, Yautja toured all over in 2013 and have no plans to stop. Described as a melting pot of the hardcore and metal genres, Yautja does not prescribe to one singular sound. Truly versatile and extremely hostile.
DETHRONE (Austin, TX) Pummeling down beat hardcore is Dethrone’s way of communicating to the world. Rage filled musicians on a war path. Dethrone spent 2013 writing for a full length and playing shows. Be on the look out for a full length this year.
REVEAL RENEW (Tampa, FL) Punk rock through and through. Reveal Renew has a youthful message in their music: less talk, more rock. 2013 saw extensive touring for Reveal Renew including a Warped Tour run. Good things come for those that rip.
ABACUS (Columbia, SC) Equal parts punk, hardcore and metal, Abacus has broken new ground in the aggressive community. Heavy riffs, a pummeling rhythm section and frighteningly crass vocals paint a dynamic and heavy picture.
GNARWHAL (Nashville, TN) Hardworking, humble, belligerent, spastic, confusing, magnificent. Gnarwhal’s insanely up-tempo and rhythmically impulsiveness surprises and excites at every turn. Constantly touring and releasing new music, Gnarwhal won’t stop. Can’t stop. Nana nana.
SEIN ZUM TODE (Columbia, SC) Weird. Weirder than weird. Deranged. Sein zum Tode’s off-the-wall time signatures and ear-shredding vocals are displaced by the beyond-disruptive percussion that makes listener’s hearts skip numerous beats. Truly original song arrangement and imaginative soundscapes make Sein zum Tode unforgettable.
PRIMITIVE MAN (Denver, CO) Following the massively successful debut full-length, Scorn (Relapse Records), Primitive Man have found no rest. Constantly touring the US and releasing their Crowbar cover of “Suffering Brings Wisdom”, 2013 belongs to Primitive Man and their doom-inspired sonic cannon.
FATRAT DA CZAR (Columbia, SC) Crafting Da ColdWar in 2006 with famed DJ Shekeese Tha Beast, standouts like, and drew the line in the sand. Returning 2008 with the classic follow-up Da ColdWar 2: The Day Afta, FatRat Da Czar single-handedly distinguished himself by pronouncing his importance to everyone able to hear his music. concur. Currently prepping the third and final installment of Da ColdWar series, FatRat Da Czar is primed to pounce on every opportunity coming his way. It would be wise to get on board.
GRAND ROYAL (SC/VA) Grand Royal, the brand new hip-hop group consisting of Ali Rah, VoNorris, Heazy Boi, LaLisa and Preemo Heem. One of the most unique hip-hop groups around, their balance of old school and new school is like nothing else hitting the hip-hop scene today.
WE ROLL LIKE MADMEN (Columbia, SC) South Carolina’s We Roll Like Madmen distill a jolting concoction of thoughtful lyricism and lush, beat-driven soundscapes with sonic influences ranging from hip-hop to dance. Their contagious stage presence features emotive vocals uplifted by an intoxicating meld of controllerism and instrumentation.
SIGNS OF IRIS (Greenville, SC) Greenville’s Signs of Iris is an emotional, synth-driven band with high-energy and a great live show.
RAN BRUCE (Greenville, SC) One of the leaders of #newSC, Ran Bruce takes soul, funk and hip-hop to blend a jaw-dropping collection of records.
COLE CONNOR (Columbia, SC) This young emcee has made a name for himself throughout SC with his energetic and quirky hip-hop.a
CHADD DOWNING (Columbia, SC) Born in Jersey before ending up in Columbia, SC, Downing’s flow and style is heavily influenced by the Northeast and brings a whole new character to the Fluid showcase.
In addition to music, we have invited Atlanta’s own CAPTAIN & MAYBELLE, a bizarre and engaging a shock and a laugh sideshow performing in the street surrounding the club and around the backyard of Javelina Bar! These partners in crime perform classic sideshow entertainment with a contemporary twist! You can call him a sword swallower, human blockhead or fire breather; You just call her Maybelle.
